Rocking in the Rockies

The Trip

We've been planning a Colorado-Wyoming-Utah trip for a couple of months and now the flights are booked, I can start a pre-trip report and get a countdown!

We are starting and finishing in Denver, taking in Cheyenne (for Frontier Days), Thermopolis, Sheridan, Yellowstone NP, Grand Teton NP, Driggs, Jackson Hole, Salt Lake City, Moab - for Canyonlands NP & Arches NP, Glenwood Springs, Rocky Mountain NP and Boulder, before going back to Denver.

Most of our accommodation is already booked - Cheyenne books up a year in advance for the Frontier days and National Park accommodation is in demand, so we booked those early. Then we decided to check out a few more places and if we liked the prices, we booked. Everything is cancellable in case we get a better price.

The only hotels left to book are Denver, Boulder, Glenwood Springs and Estes Park (for Rocky Mountain).

Meet the cast

This is us outside the Alamo in San Antonio, TX earlier this year. From left to right

Hannah - Sassy and classy. Vegetarian. Finder of bargains and cool stuff. Funkiest photo poser.

Evan - the Fool in the Pool. Joker and coiner of holiday catchphrases. Carnivore. Lover of American Sports and doing loads of stuff.

Elizabeth - Da Boss. The Clark Griswold/Monica from Friends of the family. Chief Planner and booker of things and general cheerleader. Also the one who always makes eye contact with a tour guide/random person and then gets stuck being talked at for half an hour while the rest of the family escape.

Paul - Daddy Cool. Main driver and planner of outdoor activities. Loves horses and all things cowboy. Still desperately seeking a bear encounter.

We really love American National Parks and are very happy to being visiting at least 5 this time. We are also hoping for a baseball game or two and some horse-riding if we can.

I haven't found much in the way of Trip Reports for this part of the US, so if anybody can share any info, that would be grand.

Trip planning continues - hotels are all booked and we're starting to look into baseball tickets. We've also been looking at the line up for Cheyenne Frontier Nights as we are meeting up with my sister and her family to go to the Rodeo.

The line up was announced and we looked at who was playing on the Saturday night - Florida Georgia Line. Evan likes them, as does his cousin, but I have no intention of paying good money to see the Beavis and Butthead of Country music, especially having already sat through them at C2C last year.

So, we were waiting to see who would play on the Friday night - beginning to hope that it might be Brad Paisley, especially after he cancelled his European dates at the end of July.

Then the line up was announced and it was . . . . KISS. With Aaron Watson who we absolutely love, but still - KISS?

Research was done, rocker friends consulted and we decided - Texas country music plus glam rock - may as well go to the most random gig ever. So we got tickets for the show!

Back to Quebec - a log cabin near Mont Tremblant and then hopefully back to the cottage on the lake (the owner has it on the market so will only take bookings from the end of March!). First though we have a week in Dubai in April! A lot of planning!

Kids passports needed renewing, so I've done that. Waited until Hannah's 16th birthday so we could get an adult one for her this time. So I've just done the most stressful job of any holiday to the US - ESTA applications! All approved, as we would expect, but it is a nerve-wracking few minutes while you wait for the approval screen. Not sure why this is always my job either?
