Mobile Tax Query

Hi Everyone

Firstly, I have queried this with work, but we have to go through a stupid online pay portal questionnaire and I’ve no idea when they will get back to me!

So, every month I get paid the exact same amount of pay & shift pay, and I have the same deductions for my pension.

I’ve checked my payslip today, and I’ve been taxed almost £100 extra!

I’ve no idea why, as there has been no alteration to my wages in any way since last month.

Does anyone else know why this may be?

As I say, I’m waiting for them to get back to me with a reason, but I’d like to be armed with proper facts, as they are known to stuff up peoples pay from time to time!

Thanks in Advance

Gill

Have you checked the tax code this month compared to last ? Can you remember receiving a new tax code through the post ?
If your employer tends to make mistakes maybe call HMRC and see if they have made any changes to the code.

If your gross pay is exactly the same, then it can only be your tax code that has changed, can you compare it to the previous month.

I’ve just checked, no changes to tax codes on any of my payslips for this year

Would I just call any HMRC? Do I need any specific information for them?

And has your gross pay and pension deductions been identical each month? Is it income tax or NI that is different this month?

I suspect HMRC will refer you back to your payroll department.

Have you tried using something like this to check your deductions.

Thanks Claudette

Yes, there’s been no change since our annual pay rises in April. I’m just on to HMRC now, so I’ll see what they say and keep you posted.

Thank so much

I wonder if they’ve put you on an emergency week 1 code for some reason...
Good luck getting to the bottom of it 🤞

Even if your tax code is the same does last months have anything next to the code. It could be an X, W, 1 or an M ? This indicates last months was an emergency code and if it is no longer there this month the employer has backdated the code to April.

So, in April we receive a pay rise and a bonus. Apparently the month after (so May) I paid less tax than I should have due to the extra paid in April.

From now onwards, the amount of deductions will be the same as this month every month as it’s now been corrected.

Does any of this sound right? I certainly didn’t get enough of a pay rise to lose an extra £100 odd per month. And why would May have been a month were I paid less tax?

I’m so confused.

Still no reply from my actual employer

Could your bonus in April have taken you in to the higher rate tax band for that month ? If so you would have received a refund in May if you were back to being a basic rate taxpayer.
