What was your biggest culture shock when travelling abroad?

I think mine was in Crete (1984) in a small coastal town and the goats still occupied the ground floor of the house.

Going to Turkey for the first time and arriving at the hotel in the middle of the night. I woke then at 5am to the sound of adhan being called from the nearby mosque. I’m ashamed to say I had no idea what it was, but it sounded so peaceful and calming but surreal

For me, whilst on honeymoon in Kenya. The day we woke up to go on a 3 night safari I felt quite ropey. By the time our minibus was driving through Mombasa the sweat was pouring off me and my stomach was cramping so bad. I had to ask the driver to stop somewhere as I needed the loo, I was going to throw up there and then or a quick stop. He pulled into a petrol station and said toilet round the back. I ran round and nearly puked at the sight. There was excrement everywhere I was so unwell I just had to pick my way through and do the business Someone on our trip kindly gave me their last Imodium which helped settle my stomach a little bit. Boy was I unwell. I can still see that toilet in my mind

This reminded of an experience I had. Not a big culture shock but a shock nonetheless for me. I was desperate for a wee when we were travelling down the Pacific coast highway. We stopped at a remote car park with a portaloo. Normally I would have stayed well clear but I was desperate. I opened the door to be greeted with excrement all over the sink and inside of the door. Needless to say I held on for another couple of hours and held my hands well away from my body until we reached a sink.

First time in Florida, 1992. Going into a shop, sorry store, and being greeted with - how are you today. I found that and the fact no one could understand what we were saying very disconcerting.
