we booked our seats with no extra charge 331 days out from our trip in oct. flying economy classic (standard). booked bubble on way out (which we paid for) and downstairs on way back which was free.

worrying though if they are doing this.. you should be bound by the terms and conditions at the time of booking surely.

I think that’s exactly the case. At the time of booking Virgin hadn’t introduced the different levels of economy and all seats were chargeable hence OP has been charged now.

virgin pre booked seats

We booked via VH in March 2018 just before the seat changes came in to effect I queried this with virgin via on line chat and their response was

Because you were more than 331 days away from your departure went the new tiered system came into affect, your flights will be economy classic and you will have seat allocation included. (I have a copy of the response)

I have just spoken to the Virgin Flying Club and they confirm this is the case that there is no charge for seat booking and that they do not understand why the OP was charged
