passport validity 90 days after return?

Is this still a problem?

We are leaving 4th-12th May my son's passport expires on 22nd May.

Just looking at the calendars there isn't much room between Christmas and may to get it done as he'll need it for trips home in Feb carnival and Easter in March/April.

We live abroad which means having to calculate longer times for renewal...

Ideally I'd like to wait until after our US trip as we then have 2 months before summer holidays.

Anyone know the laws on this?

The passport only needs to be valid for the time you are in the USA so he would be perfectly fine. The six month / 90 day thing DOES NOT apply with the United States. There have been many threads on this over the years and despite what Travel Agents and others spout you do not need that period on your passport. I quote direct from the US Embassy's site:

The requirement that a passport is valid for travel for six months beyond the holder’s stay in the United States is waived for certain nationalities, including British Citizens.

You can find it here:

uk.usembassy.gov/visas/non-i...vel-documents/

Yep, just validity of your stay.

A few websites, including airlines like AA say different, but these are just catch all statements. UK (and I assume Irish) citizens don’t need it.

Not sure what you mean by "still"
There's lots of threads on here confirming you don't need any buffer time left at all (and haven't done for over a decade)

Might get a black cross in immigration if using one of the booths. We did in November as passport expired in February.
