RAW vs JPEG

Obviously for best results it’s going to be RAW. But you have to process the images.

To me it seems my best option is that when I’m going out specifically to take photos or there’s a special moment then stick to RAW.

But for birthdays, casual, stuff where people want copies qoetc then I’m better off switching to jpeg rather than using RAW and rushing processing.

Just wondering what others do

RAW is the best by far for post.

The problem is the large file sizes, and the fact you have to edit every picture to make it useable.

Therefore unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time in post, say when back from a holiday, a JPEG with a fairly flat picture profile is a good choice. Then it is still useable out of camera, but the flat profile gives you more options post.

I have dual card slots and one card captures the picture in RAW and one JPEG which is the best of both worlds.

That’s what I’m thinking. RAW just for specific photo shoots

I have always used RAW, now I have a camera with dual slots I use both, save JPEG's to a SD card and RAW's to a CF card.
Before I had a dual slot camera I would just use RAW, I would apply a base process to all the images I had taken and convert these to JPEG's. Then in time I'd go through these and pick out any special one's and redo the RAW file and then further edit it in photoshop.

Makes sense, particularly on holiday where you could be taking hundreds. Maybe if you know on holiday you’ll come across a really good photo op set it to RAW first. Or if you have hot keys on the camera where RAW/JPEG can be assigned, that would be a good one to set up.

I use jog unless I am doing a specific special shoot.

On holiday, I tend to import my photos onto my iPad and so some quick editing before writing my trip report. I wouldn’t have the time or inclination to edit every photo on holiday.

So this surprised me.

Had my first go with RAW yesterday. Just a couple of shots then did the editing with Canon’s software and was really pleased with the results and how easy it was.

But what surprised me was as soon as a saved the RAW files to the laptop One Drive auto uploaded them and I was able to view them on my phone, was also able to save them from there to the iPhone photo app where I can do some basic editing. So turns out I can shoot in RAW and share them with family fairly quickly and do the full processing later. So I seem to have full freedom to choose providing I have my laptop with me, so just another option
Edited to add - Turns out the Canon Camera Connect app will transfer RAW files straight from camera to iPhone, so I don’t even need to have laptop with me😄

Yes Apple photos has been able to show and edit raw for some time now. Problem is all the RAW photos need some editing to look decent.

This for example this little fella was shot RAW and edited on my iPad, although I prefer Luminar on my Mac. Try Snapseed on mobile devices, I’ve won a competition with something edited on that.
