Gill I was a Dementia specialist nurse many suffered and their carers walk 5 /6 times that a day
Ive spent many a 12 hour shift making sure walkers were safe actually ate drank something used the toilet etc
It’s a horrific illness and we all can be touched by it but unfortunately it’s looked as a disease of old people it’s not it can strike you in your 20s so little money spent on research prevention etc which could actually save the NHS millions now and in the
Future
As scary as it is folks if you think you or a relative might just have. Very early signs get it checked out
The quicker you get help the longer the long good bye for you and the family stays away
And honestly it is a long long good by for many families

I've just caught up with this thread and although it has been discussed before on the Dibb I thought it an opportune time to remind everyone about setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney. This isn't just something to do for elderly relatives but also to arrange for yourselves but it does make it so much easier when you may be in a situation where you have to take over looking after a relatives health and money. I know only too well what it means as I have been down this route 3 times with my family.

For those who don't know about LPA's there are 2 types, one for Health/Welfare and one for Finance. It is possible to sort this out without using a solicitor by printing off online forms and it is much more economical to do it this way. Don't be frightened of filling the forms in - just take time to read what is needed and double check them once completed before they are submitted.

I've already organised my own LPAs for use if necessary in the future and to be honest I'm more than happy it is done and just as important my will is up to date. It's not a pleasant thing to think of but it really is worth some time to consider.

We set them up in the early days of covid, our friends had to sit in the hall and witness all the signatures! Very glad we did.

It’s awful, and another reminder to not take retirement for granted. Many, many people will not get to 67 or 68 and many will not be in good physical or mental shape when they do. My sister has terminal cancer at 60.

I now have LPA in place for both my sister and my dad.

I retired 2 years ago at 52 and DH retired just before he turned 50 and we have no regrets - I hear of far too many people not getting to enjoy their golden years.

Of course I know that it’s not financially viable for a lot of people to retire quite so early, but in my opinion, there is nothing more valuable than time, so I would urge anyone to stop as soon as they can, and enjoy life whilst they are fit and healthy,

I have just checked my Justgiving page and I am already almost at my target, and it's not even February yet!

Some of the donors are Dibbers too, so if that was you - THANK YOU so much!

It's given me the impetus to start doing some practice walks in advance!

My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 3 months ago and she is 71.She has started to take the medication but she just seems to be deteriorating pretty quickly.I am so worried about her as she lives on her own but she has good neighbours who help her.I’ve sorted out power of attorney’s and am just in the process of applying for attendance allowance. It’s just so much harder than I imagined to deal with.
