what are they looking for? If they want peace and quiet then I would suggest a cottage in Staithes just north of Whitby. If they want a city break then Liverpool or Newcastle. If they fancy a hot tub / lodge then Pickering Lodges are great and Scarborough/Whitby/ Dalby Forest are all in easy reach

Staithes, Runswick Bay, Robin Hoods Bay are the nicer parts, far better than Whitby in my opinion, infact I believe Staithes has just won best beach . So much history in all of them

Definitely not Staithes beach/ harbour 🤢 it regularly fails testing. Fantastic for crabbing or a pint.
Runswick Bay was voted best beach, a few miles along the coast.

We went to Robin Hoods bay on Friday. I think I must be missing something? It is very pretty but we walked down to the bottom, had some fish and chips sat in a Bench, took a look at the beach which was unappealing (no white sand, it looked like mud), made our way as slowly as possible back up the hill looking in every shop that was open which wasn’t many, and we’re back in the car in under 2 hours.

Thought we’d stop in Whitby to make a longer day of it but couldn’t get parked, and to be honest it was heaving and didn’t look inviting. Just jammed packed with people.

I was really disappointed.

For the OP - how about the lakes? Or the dales.

Sorry I stand corrected, you are right.
As a near local I love all except Whitby.
Goathland is another popular spot, a relative of ours has a gorgeous B&B there. It was used in the TV series HEARTBEAT as the doctors house.
Steam trains, country walks , what more do you want.

Actually on the Times annual beach guide it was Runswick Bay that came out top beach

Harrogate, York, Castle Howard, Helmsley. Stay in Pickering and visit all of these, catch the Steam train up to Goathland, go to Hutton le Hole, Whitby, Scarborough or Robin Hoods Bay. All nice places for a walk, a bit of sightseeing etc but not sure what they are after.

Alternatively there’s the Peak District with Chatsworth, Bakewell, Castleton and many lovely places in between. Again lovely for a bit of sightseeing, walking or even cycling the Monsal Trail.
