We lost Mum last October after a five-year struggle (and we knew much earlier than that).

Such a horrible disease.

My nan was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 79 and passed away at the age of 89.

In the beginning she knew she was forgetting things and she’d get really upset because her mum had some form of dementia and she saw the awful things that happened to her.

She declined very quickly though in terms of understanding and by the time she was formally diagnosed she didn’t really understand, thankfully.

My dad at 74 has just been diagnosed officially with Alzheimer’s.

When we went for the consult they have estimated that due to his head scans and assessment he probably has been living with this for at least 5 years with some symptoms possibly starting as long ago as 10 years.

It’s been a 2 year struggle to get him assessed and diagnosed because of the “covid back log” that they repeated to us time and time again.

He already is at the stage of where he can’t be left alone at all and has declined rapidly. However because of his A1 physical health (the man is a lean mean machine!) he has been able to start on some medication that should help with the symptoms and maybe make him feel more sharp and less foggy.

It truly is such a cruel illness and I honestly wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy , the wiser affect on the family has also been tough.
So if anyone is in the same boat as me I’m sending you lots of love and strength.

My mum was lucky she was diagnosed early and had about a year on medication that slowed symptoms.
I found our local Alzeimhers Society a great help, I had a nurse who called with me and answered lots of questions and I also went to their local carers group. Would recommend them if you have a local branch.

Thank you - we have a nurse from the memory clinic coming to see us as a family to discuss support , care options etc plus they said about the Alzheimer’s society and their support staff so will definitely look into that as well. My dad and step mother are a 3 hour round trip away from me and my sister because they moved away about 7 years ago so that is an added pressure.

Truly a horrible disease , If I get it I hope I realize so I can decide what to do for myself.
As for Pauline Quirke I thought she was a very underrated actress and its a shame she will be remembered for Birds of a feather , which in my opinion never stretched her at all

My mum was diagnosed with dementia last year. She was only 68 and had only just retired. I was the one who had to inform her that I had concerns and she blames me for her now not being able to drive but my conscience is clear. Would never have forgiven myself if she’d killed someone whilst driving.

That's so rough, only 68.
She probably knew deep down but it's a hard thing to face.
Hope things are on an even keel for you.
