Brommy - Naples is a long hot day in the car from the Manasota area in August and when you get there the main attaction is the beach (beautiful) but I would explore beaches such as Sanibel or Siesta Key which are closer first unless you like the outlet shopping in which case it is worth the trip for a visit to the Miromar.

I will probably give Naples a miss if it is pretty much just a great beach and shopping centre; especially as there are great beaches which are closer and we don't 'do' shopping in the UK, let alone waste valuable holiday time.
