Staying at Universal while doing disney
Hi everyone, looking at starting to book for next year holiday. We are a family of 4 DD being 19, 14. The prices of a 2 week stay on disney property is on the very high side. So are looking at booking Cabana bay for 2 weeks then travel to disney.
I know this will cosy the car hire and parking, for both hotel stay and parks. Has anyone done this, if so is it practical or not. Should we stay on disney property. Any advice welcomed. |

We’ve done it in 2017, stayed at cabana bay and travelled to Disney in a hire car. Cabana bay offered a discount on parking because we were staying for 2 weeks, not sure if they still do this but if you book through virgin I’m pretty sure parking is free at cabana bay anyway.
We didn’t find it too bad driving to Disney, it was a nice drive and we would do it again in a heartbeat |

We do this almost all trip (and the opposite way around too) as we are not the type to just stay on one property, we like to mix it up. Depends which hotel you’re staying in at Universal, but the trip is usually no more than 15-30 mins tops.

It’s a fair drive from Cabana Bay to Magic Kingdom. We did this in 2015 and haven’t done it since as the traffic can be very bad at peak times. Off peak 30 minutes ( Google Maps) and peak can be 45-60 mins.
If not planning on visiting Universal there are better places to stay which are closer to WDW. Check out Floridays or LBV resort |

I think that’s fair - if no plans at all to do Universal, but only Disney, then maybe better not stay there.
That said when we were there last month we never had a significant problem with traffic, in spite of the fact that it was a “peak” time. Our hotel was a little further toward Disney than Cabana Bay (we were just by the huge McDonald’s!) and we were making it to WDW in 15-20 mins. We never had any journeys in either direction of more than half an hour. I do remember traffic being worse in previous years - I can’t tell you why it was so good this time, maybe people are still working from home?!

We have done this the other way around. Didn’t find it too much of an issue at all. We didnt hire the car for the whole holiday though, went for 21 nights and had the car for 10 of those, where we went to Universal, Seaworld, Busch Gardens and the outlets.
