I was thinking this too and the solicitor should have told you about any outstanding appeals or applications near the property. I also double checked myself about ones near us as we bought the house because it had lovely views!

Hopefully they will "pretty" it up and you will only see it when you come out the side door and not when you are sitting in your garden x

Perhaps they put it there to avoid any dispute about it being too close to the boundary.

No we only know about it from our other neighbours, as you say though, it's all history now, we've been here almost 3 years so won't change a thing.

Fortunately we can't see their garden at all from ours, the run up the side is quite long so our garden views are still all green.

We do spend most of our time in our kitchen diner, which is where I took the photo from but sounds like we've got to just suck it up anyway.

Ah well, thank you to everyone who provided useful information.

Could you put trellis on top of the fence, trail something nice along it ? Make it a feature of your garden, rather than something that bugs you every time you step outside ?

It dosent matter if this is temporary or permanent. If it is under permitted development rules you dont need planning permission. They could also have used bricks and mortar if they wanted. By the photos it looks like they are clued up on the rules.

Yes this is our plan, although it's their fence so will take a bit of planning and cost a fair bit as it's a very long run down the side.
