Incorrect police records... any advice please?

My husband has to have security clearance done every year where he works. He has been there since 2002.
He has never been in trouble with the police and is actually going through vetting with the MET at the moment to become a police officer. He had to complete a new DBS for his current work in December and Yesterday he received a letter from the Home Office stating that his name has been linked to various offences and convictions dating from 1994 to 2011 to say we were shocked was an understatement! Every CRB/DBS/CTC check has come back fine since 2002 so we have no idea where all of a sudden this has come from. The home office were very unhelpful and said all he can do is apply for a SAR from the Police which can take 40 days. In the mean time without security clearance he could lose his job and obviously not get the job with the Met police. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? Obviously it's a case of mistaken identity but it seems such a load of hassle he now has to go through to prove it isn't him. His last DBS was dated Jan 2014 which he got when he applied to become a parent governor at my son's school. Once again this was completely clear. The home office wont even accept this as prove that it isn't him. He has tried so hard to get into the Met and finally he is nearly there and now this could ruin his chances. Does anybody know if there is anything else we could do to prove it isn't my husbands record that they are looking at?

A DBS doesn't show up all convictions (such as spent cautions) or some information that the police may hold about an individual.

Could there be something he isn't telling you?

Omg no way. It said he has had 34 convictions and 57 offences between 94 and 2011. We have been together since 1995 so i think I would most probably know if he had these. Plus he would never have got a job where he works with these on his record.

FOI or dataprotection records request to get this sorted, personally i would seek legal advice or citizens advice another option.

You could apply for an ACRO Police certificate which will show everything held on the police database about your dh. There is a 2 day service which costs £80. acro.police.uk/police_certificates.aspx

No problem. My brother had to use it once and it was very quick.

Oh no this looks like it's only for people applying for a visa. Oh well looks like we'll just have to do the 40 day one

My brother didn't use it for a visa, he just needed the information quickly and it's the same sort of thing as far as I'm aware. You can always call their customer services team on Monday morning to double check.
