Dreaming of Northern Europe: Day 4 – Nynäshamn, Sweden

Friday 11th August 2023

We were awakened suddenly at about 2am by Isabella calling out loudly “Where are you?”! I looked over to see if she was ok and she was still asleep - nobody else was though! Fortunately Caleb went straight back to sleep but Jo wasn’t able to get back to sleep for ages. When we asked her about it in the morning she didn’t remember anything.

It was about 8am that we woke up properly to find that Caleb was awake and in need of some milk. He sat with Jo and I in bed drinking his milk while we read him “Moles Spectacles” - the new Julia Donaldson “Tales from Acorn Wood” book we’d bought him for the holiday.

Once Isabella was awake we got ready and made our way to Cabanas. The ship was quiet and there were lots of available tables so we found a table and hit the buffet.

Getting stuck in

After another delicious buffet breakfast we headed to the Oceaneer’s Lab for an open house. As we headed through the pool area Caleb stopped to watch Monsters University that was playing on the Funnel Vision.

Just like the rest of the ship, the Lab was quiet. After playing around in the Millenium Falcon for a bit we headed back to the room to get the pram and then we left the ship.

Fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy

We weren’t in a rush this morning (as you can probably tell) as we had no real plans other than to go for a wander into town. Having looked at the excursions to Stockholm and other things to do in Nynäshamn there wasn’t anything that enticed us.

The town centre was about a 15 minute walk away and there were handy coloured lines on the ground that led us there. It was a pleasant walk, if not that interesting. There wasn’t really anything to do in the town centre, so after a brief look around we headed back to the ship.

Nynäshamn

Opposite where the ship was docked was a Lidl so we made a brief stop and I bought some beers. Isabella bought some banana sweets and we got some snacks for Caleb. Interestingly Swedish supermarkets don’t sell wine or spirits and the beer has to be below 3.5% ABV.

By the time we returned to the ship it was time for lunch and another trip to Cabanas. Caleb was entertained by a couple of the servers - they were making him laugh and he was smiling, waving and high fiving!

Once lunch was done Caleb was tired and in need of a nap. We took him back to the room and put him down, and then I stayed in the room with him and watched some more Andor while Jo and Isabella went off around the ship.

Jo put some washing on and then went and relaxed in the adults area while Isabella went to Edge.

By about 4pm everyone was back in the room so we woke Caleb up, played with him for a little while and then took him to the nursery for a couple of hours before dinner.

Play time

We decided to try a different bar today but after heading to the 687 Sports Bar it turned out that there was something happening in there so we ended up back in the District Lounge again - and it turned out that we were the only ones in there!

We ordered two drinks of the day and a non alcoholic drink of day - none of which I made a note of - and sat watching the same singer/guitarist we saw the other day - Ryan Schmidt - playing an instrumental set.

Drinks of the day

He was very good and we felt bad that we had to leave to go and get ready for dinner as we were still the only people in the bar - the ship was still relatively quiet with people off on excursions.

Back at the room Jo and I had some wine and beers, got ready and then went to collect Caleb from the nursery. He’d had a great time playing and making things and showing off the book that he took with him. We were very pleased that he was enjoying it!

Tonight’s dinner was at the Royal Table restaurant. Tonight’s menu is probably our favourite - it’s the same on the other ships even though the restaurant has a different name and decor; Lumiere’s on the Magic, Triton’s on the Wonder.

Royal Table

We had basically what we always have from this menu:

Jo and I: Escargot Gratinee: Herb-marinated Snails with Finely Chopped Mushrooms, topped with Garlic Butter / French Onion Soup with Gruyere Cheese Crouton / Chateaubriand-Roasted Filet Steak: Roasted FIlet Steak, Crushed New Potatoes with Shallots, Buttered Green Beans, Red WIne Jus, and a Béarnaise Sauce on the Side / Grand Marnier Soufflé served with Grand Marnier Crème Anglaise

Isabella: Breaded and Deep Fried Brie with an Orange and Cranberry Chutney / Slow-roasted Breast of Chicken served with Garden Vegetables and Baked Potato / Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brûlée with Almond Biscotti

Caleb: Fish / Mickey Ice Cream Bar

Once again Caleb was having a great time with the servers; waving and high fiving them!

After another delicious meal we made our way out into the lobby where there was an amazing violinist called Jordan Caswell. Caleb was a big fan and enjoyed watching, dancing, running around and generally having the time of his life!

As the ship had started to leave port, some of the characters were out and about so Caleb and Isabella met Donald Duck.

Caleb enjoying his evening

Caleb loved meeting him but by now he was getting tired so we headed back to the room and gave Caleb his bath.

Jo went up on deck 11 to get coffee while Isabella stayed in lobby to watch the rest of Jordan’s set. He told her that he enjoyed watching Caleb running around and enjoy himself.

She came back briefly after the set was over and then went up to Edge to meet her new friends. Caleb went to bed while Jo and I drank our coffee, wrote notes and had showers.

We read for a while until Isabella came back, she had her shower and then we all went to bed.

Lovely day, the open house at Oceaneer's looks so quiet! Every time I see photos of the kids clubs on the ships I just can't get over how impressive they are. Also, I love Isabella's Silly Symphonies top!
