Annual travel insurance

Our travel insurance have emailed us that we are not covered for coronavirus for flights booked last August because our policy renews in May.

Apparently we should contact who we booked with for a refund as they are obliged to reimburse us if they cannot provide the service.

Totally missing the point that at this time our airline has not said they are not providing the service and that chances of refunds are zero even if they do reach that point in June.

Now going to have to contact them again. What would ever be the point of having a long standing annual travel policy?

As I understood it, your policy does cover you as the booking was made on your "old" policy & new guidelines relate to bookings made after March ? Certainly that's what our annual policy states. What some are saying though is that they won't cover you if you pay the balance as that is the equivalent of a "pre-existing condition" IYKWIM but that does sort of leave everyone "between a rock & a hard place"- don't pay balance= losing the booking

Insurance cover or not, your first call for a refund is the tour operator/agent.

We had exactly the same experience when Thomas cook went under but luckily claimed on credit card for a refund. I will never buy an annual policy now unless it covers holiday dates. I always assumed that as long as we renewed we would be covered. But I was wrong.

Well that is what I thought as well because if you book several trips you are not going to be thinking every time about the date of booking and the travel dates for each trip. It is utterly pointless paying for annual insurance because how do you ever pick an appropriate renewal date

At the moment though the airline is still flying on our date. Nothing is cancelled for our trip yet.

We are looking at a situation now that the flight leaves, the parks are open and we cant go in case we got sick and needed treatment simply because we renewed our insurance with the same company for years instead of shopping around

It may be worth clarifying with your insurer if they are referring to cancellation cover or all aspects of the policy. Some policies whilst not covering cancellations will continue to cover medical expenses incurred even as a result of covid 19.
