Ideas to combine with Boston & NY
Looking for ideas! Originally planning on flying into Boston, spend a few nights, train to NY , spend a few nights, take a cruise and then fly home from NY. Our flights are booked (and paid for). This is late May/ early June. If it is ok to travel , we might still go on the trip but postpone the cruise for another time. Looking for suggestions how to fill a week instead of the cruise. We are a family with two small kids. I've been to Boston lots of times before kids(really like it, it's been a few years), NY a few times, visited Philadelphia & DC once (same trip). Not keen on driving (especially in the cities). Thanks

If you look at the trip report in my signature, you will find 3 days in Boston, a train to NY, then 3 days in New York... all on the one thread.
Hope it helps.

The Children's Museum in Boston has a new 3-story climbing structure that looks like fun. Our kids have enjoyed riding the Swan Boats in the Public Garden and watching the boats on Long Wharf. Martin's Park has a terrific playground right on the water. We've climbed about there. Always love the New England Aquarium! And the reenactment aboard the Boston Tea Party Museum ship was fun for the young ones. A ride on the Boston Harbor Ferry? Month of May will be beautiful weather in Boston and lots to do on or near the water. Don't miss the light-up swings on The Lawn (near the Boston Convention Center). There's all sorts of lawn games to be played there as well and it's a unique place to bring a picnic lunch. Let the kids run around in the fountains on the Greenway near the Wharf. Couldn't pull our kids out of there! Those and the fountains on the corner of Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues, where we ultimately decided to bring a picnic lunch, as the kids didn't want to leave.
Last summer we were in Boston and splurged and did the Duck Tours (WWII era amphibious vehicles). We had quite a funny host and everyone loved it, especially the little ones who all had a turn to "drive" while in the Charles River. If you had older kids I would recommend a whale watch or one of the high speed "ferries" like Codzilla -- what a blast! Love Boston. Enjoy!

Toronto is about an hour flight from New York and is a lovely city, very walkable, plus Niagara Falls are a short while away.
I'm sure there's plenty to do in NY/Boston though to fill the time though if you don't fancy more travelling! We've done a week twice now in NY and still lots more we want to do.

Thanks for the ideas! Happy with a few nights in Boston and a few nights in New York. Need ideas to replace the week on the cruise. Maybe the Cape for a few days, add Philadelphia or DC or a theme park or two!

D.C. is a great place for a few days. You can stay very economically across the Potomac by R Reagan international and this is only a $6 taxi to the Lincoln memorial at the bottom of the Mall. From there, you can see everything on foot.
Spreadsheet with you in a couple of minutes.

Last year we did a road trip starting in NY, driving to Cape Cod then to Peabody (Close to Salem) and finally Boston.
I know you don’t want to drive but Cape Cod is an amazing holiday spot. |

Last year we did Niagara Falls before our cruise out of NY then after the cruise did Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Boston.
A few years back when we got married in NY we spent our honeymoon in Newport, Rhode Island and Cape Cod. |

Another vote for Cape Cod and Niagara Falls, both of which we did during our East Coast trip and both were amazing

Cape Cod is fabulous, and all about the beaches, but not usually until July. End of May the beaches will be cold and the water will turn your ankles red (just your ankles because no one would go any deeper than that). If I want the beach in May, I want to be in Florida.
ETA:Coming from a parent of four -- with two young ones, I would honestly just split the time between Boston and New York. Plenty fun for them and less hectic. How old are they?
