Mobile Mobility issues - advice please

Hi
Just discovered daughter (24yrs) needs ACL op in two weeks, and our holiday is in 12 weeks. Therefore due to complex op, involving both knees! the consultant has warned recovery may be slow so in Florida could have restricted walking capacity or on crutches.
Hence the question what advice can you give eg assistance at airports, Disney etc.
Aware I need to contact insurance company of this development!
Thanks

Oh dear. I have no idea sorry but I'm sure somebody will help out with advice.

The reason I am posting is my Wife had a hip replacement yesterday and is banned from long haul flying for 12 weeks. That's ok with us as we fly in 12+ weeks so just outside the threshold.

Will the same apply to your Daughter ref flying?

Contact your airline and they will arrange assistance in airport here and Orlando.
We have always found the assistance to be excellent as my mum has needed assistance for the past few years.

If your daughter agrees (street cred and all that,) you could consider hiring a mobility scooter, or possibly taking a wheelchair for her.

I'd confirm with your insurer first before making any further plans.

Your daughter will only be 10 weeks post op when you go. You really need advice from consultant/ pre-op advice on dvt risks etc and whether she will be on Clexane or similar and flying so soon after lower limb surgery, then contact insurers.

Hope your wife is comfortable with her new hip. X

If she is cleared to go, I would advise buying an inexpensive wheelchair in the UK or renting one for a donation from the Red Cross. It is much easier at the airport if you can just push her yourself rather than relying on the airport wheelchairs. You can then check it right at the plane door. You can then use it in the parks as crutches will be far too tiring for her.

Has your daughters consultant given the go ahead to fly? I go in 8 weeks and recently had a diagnosis of adult spinal deformation and a couple of broken bones in my back. My consultant had given me the go ahead to travel and I was dreading the call to the insurance company as I thought they would hit me with a massive premium. It was actually fine and because I had been diagnosed after booking the holiday, they didn’t even need to screen me, just put notes on my record, but I was asked if I was travelling against medical advice.

For the sake of the rest of the party I would suggest hiring an ECV over there. There are loads of firms that do them and then you don’t have someone wearing themselves out pushing a wheelchair around everywhere - will probably make your daughter happier about it too as she won’t be dependent on another member of the family to get around.
