OP,
I agree with MrTM here, your budget may seem light but I suggest let Autotrader be your friend. For your budget I would advise a search of 30 to 50 miles radius budget wise do 2500 to 4000. Leave the model as any as fuel type etc. The vast majority will be independent garages so do your due diligence on them. Doing a quick search at my location saw A.large amount of 500 s ( not for me but each to own) B.Some nice looking cars that I would visit to see if good as advertised. BMW 1 seris FSH 99 k 2.0 diesel under 3k 2 owners Audi A3 part service history 1.8 fsi 3k 85k 1 owner. Mitsubishi Shogun 2.5 diesel 2.5 k 1 owner 60k and my 100 fav on the quick search Mini cooper1.6 petrol chilli pack leather fsh 52k fully loaded option list 52 k 1 owner looked showroom condition inside and out.2.7 k yes its 10 yrs old but looked a belter and nearly a thousand under budget. Time spent looking will be rewarded best of luck don't be blinkered by a model look at condition , mileage and check out garage you buy from. Best of luck in hunt.

I had one for a year, but did change it in.
I liked it when I did mostly town driving. But I changed jobs and was up and down the m6 every day. I didn’t find it slow to pull off really. But it did struggle with hills

Trying for More Ears

I had a fiat 500 for a few years until I got a new car a couple of months ago. For the most part, I loved it. I had a 2012 1.2 engine Lounge version. I had no trouble pulling off quickly at roundabouts, traffic lights etc. I found the bite point was really high (compared to other cars I’ve driven) and it wasn’t great on hills but this wasn’t a massive issue for me. They’re really easy to park and you have a lot more choice of spaces in busy areas as they’re so tiny 😂 it was very good on petrol when I first got it but not quite so much towards the end. I didn’t have to have loads done to it, think it was just new brake pads and discs and just before I sold it, it would have needed a door handle fixing (wasn’t a major issue, still usable so I sold it as it was). I drove it about 20 miles a day down a mix of country lanes and A roads, and did around 300 miles a month on the motorways and it was fine for both, although it can be a little intimidating on the motorways in it as you really feel how tiny it is compared to other cars and you can feel a little buffeted by the wind in it or when lorries go past you/you go past them. Other drivers also seem to make a lot of assumptions about you being a slow or crap driver just because you’re in a Fiat 500 and will drive up your backside or flash you to move out of their lane when you clearly can’t as there’s not enough room to pull in to the lane even in a tiny car 🤷 (even when you’re going over the speed limit 🙈. Nobody has done this to me in the 2 months since I got my new car, even when I’ve been below the speed limit ...
Hope that helps a little 😊 |

I know this isn’t what your asking but for that size-ish car then the Honda Jazz is a fab choice. After having many Fiesta’s I got a Jazz a couple of years ago and love it. Incredibly reliable, comfortable, decent performance and because the back end is square you retain loads of extra boot space (that thing can carry tons!).
It is stressful buying a new car. Good luck!

They are a love hate thing - my friend and her mum love them! But I feel too exposed, and the poor thing struggles with hills and it very loud! But nothing to loose in a test drive (I also wouldn’t recommend a punto - drove a 1.2 in Spain and it was gutless, noisy and couldn’t Hill start!)
I would however look at polos (my sister has a fab one!) and also Yaris/aygo my friend has a Yaris and it’s a nice small car (also drove one in Portugal and it was a pleasure for a small car) I have 1.6t focus, so in comparison a lot of small cars feel gutless!

I've got a 1.4 Fiat 500 convertible which I LOVE, I drive it in sport mode and it is very nippy (I commute to work by car on dual carriageways or country roads).
I wouldn't have a 1.2 though. |

Wow, thankyou all so much for your replies, plenty of ideas for us to look at. I’ve had such a stressful time with my focus, I had to have a replacement gearbox and clutch and then it broke down within a week with an unrelated electrical problem so sadly it’s now financially not worth fixing and I’m really worried we’ll buy something rubbish.
Interesting points raised about the Fiat and hills, I have a huge hill to travel daily from work, so thankyou for the heads up on that. |

Oh yeah, that was it’s biggest downfall for me, was ridiculously underpowered on hills, occasionally I had to go down to 1st gear even

I have just got a new car and a fiat 500 was going to be my first choice but as someone else said the safety rating put me off along with them only have two doors. Aygo was next choice but the smaller engine discouraged me so I went for a Clio (my previous car was a clio)but that hasn't turned out too well either! Its been in the garage for past two weeks as went wrong three weeks after purchase. so wish I had gone for a mini - my son has one now and its lovely .
