We did Highgate Park to Miami airport in April using US27 staying at the speed limits and it was a good 4 hour drive (only stop was for gas). You could add another half hour to this if you want to get over to the Collins Avenue/South Beach area.
Being 9 hours in a car in one day is not my idea of fun but I can't judge other people's tolerance levels Mick

Hi
Driving to Miami and back in a day is certainly doable. However it is a fairly boring 7-8 hours drive so I would suggest booking into a hotel for one night. If you choose a hotel further from the beach you will find they are cheaper but just as nice. Plus parking may be free of charge. The beachside hotels charge for valet parking as street parking is sparse and costs as much as the valet parking for an overnight stay. We spent 2 nights in Miami last year and will be returning again this year. We stayed on Ocean Drive and can recommend the Edgewater, South Beach.(Not the cheapest but we did get the bonus of continental breakfast and 'happy hour' in the evening with free drinks ) DeniseC |

it is possible to go there and back in a day, but i really wouldnt recommend it unless there was no other option.
when we went, we stayed here: hotelnewyorkermiami/ it was about 15 mins drive off ocean drive, free parking, and there were a couple of nice bars we went to nearby. we drove down, checked in the hotel, then went down to ocean drive, spent the day there, before heading back to the hotel in the early evening. we then went out for a meal and some drinks near the hotel. the next day, we drove back to ocean drive and spent the afternoon there before heading back. *edit* looking on their website, they now have a shuttle to/from south beath which is $10 per person, which could save on parking fees...
