The NO Route 66 Whistle Stop Tour June 2019

So this is the first draft of our 2019 California Road Trip.

There will be no Disney or Universal on this trip (well none written in the plan at the moment anyway )

I have booked most of the accommodation, but all with free cancellation just in case it gets any cheaper nearer the time.

I have been surprised by the cost of accommodation in CA so I have added the cost of mine in case anyone is interested.

Car was a mid sized SUV - 355

June 1st to 19th 2019

Day 1 - LHR to LAX. 3 nights Dunes Inn Sunset Boulevard
Day 2 - LA in a Day Tour
Day 3 - More of LA
Day 4 - Drive to Lee Vining
Day 5 - Lee Vining Lakes and Snow
Day 6 - North Lake Tahoe
Day 7 - North Lake Tahoe
Day 8 - Drive to Sacramento. Stay with friends
Day 9 - Stay with friends
Day 10 - Drive to San Francisco. 3 nights Town House Motel (391)
Day 11 - San Francisco. Tour of SF. Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf with friends
Day 12 - San Francisco. Muir Woods
Day 13 - Drive to Monterey. Nothing booked yet. Laguna Seca
Day 14 - Monterey. Whale watching. Aquarium
Day 15 - Drive to Morro Bay via Hearst Castle. 1 night Bayfront Inn (259)
Day 16 - Drive to Santa Barbara. 3 nights Super 8 by Wyndham (410)
Day 17 - Santa Barbara. Harbour & State Street
Day 18 - Santa Barbara. Sunset along Shoreline Park
Day 19 - Drive to LA. LAX to LHR
Day 20 - Arrive home

This is a work in progress so may change at anytime. Other ideas have involved shortening the time in Santa Barbara to go down to San Diego to see the USS Midway, but this depends on whether we manage to fit in the USS Iowa or not, and whether we can be bothered with more driving. DH does love driving in the States, but he has never experienced LA of SF, so he may have had enough by then!

Waiting for the Calendar to be released for Laguna Seca. If (and that is a BIG if - we are probably a week early) World Superbikes are there we will be sourcing tickets!

If Tioga Pass is not open (it has been unpassable a handful of times due to snow still around in June ) we will be reluctantly giving Yosemite a miss this time I don't DO snow!

Still to book accommodation in Monterey. At the moment I can't find anything less than 400 a night so we may be staying elsewhere!

So spreadsheet is created and folder is starting to fill up with accommodation details.

I am starting to get excited about the trip at least. Before this I had no interest whatsoever! How bad is that!

Ooh looking good. Were just out here at the mo, am coming to the end of our trip, but when you are at Monterey, instead of the Aquarium, go to Moss Landing and hire kayaks to kayak Elkhorn Slough. One of our best experiences. You got to see loads of otters, seal and pelicans in their natural environment. Much better than an aquarium.

Also we stayed at a place called Treebones Resort ( yurts) on the Big sur and it was the best place. Really chilled and relaxed, great food and a good base to see the elephant seals, Hearst Castle and myriads of beaches and hikes.
