I agree. I could never change my engagement ring. When we got engaged, some 20 odd years ago now, we had just bought a house so my ring wasnt expensive but is a beautiful, simple design. I love it because of the sentiment behind it and the fact that dh chose it for me. Many times he has offered to buy me a bigger diamond etc but then it wouldnt be my engagement ring anymore.

I don't get sentimental about "stuff", perhaps she is the same.

Once given, the ring was hers to do with as she wished, she wished to change it a little, she still wears it.

I don't wear mine, I find rings restrict blood flow or fall off anyhow. My MIL was apoplectic when she saw I do not wear my engagement or wedding ring. It is a thing, and has no bearing whatsoever on the state of our lovely marriage.

Jewellery is so personal that if she felt it needed a little more for her to wear it comfortable and often then she had every right to sort it. Same with your sister, she wears a ring she likes when she likes it.

I think Kates ring which is Dianas old one is awful and doesnt suit her at all but she has very carefully worn it for a limited number of occasions when its called for as it seems very unpractical for day to day wear. Shed be lynched if she attempted to do anything with the shape/design though!
Wow...this has jumped up a notch or two on the assumptions table.
Don't think the OP said any of those things you have suggested but more that she wouldn't do it herself.

I am not hugely sentimental, I will never get rid of my engagement or wedding rings, but I barely wear them and would happily replace them over resizing them if I felt the need. I don't care about what jewellery people buy or wear, it has no bearing on their marriage at all.

I sit in the camp of think carefully before you buy and when you do buy a sentimental item then it's for life.

I assume the ring was 'handed down' If so she should have either declined it if she didn't like it or if she accepted it then leave it as it was.
