This was what I got at the hotel in Hershey on their app, I still had to confirm my ID but it looks like Disney won't require that.

Sometimes even with magic bands mistakes are made...we spent one night in AoA last June and an American family around midnight opened our door with their magic band,we had the chain on so that was as far as they got, they were angry and must have complained as the next morning the manager called me to apologise and said it should never have happened, and that he'd seen we had a Tusker House breakfast ADR and that he'd like to comp that for us,so I went down to meet him and he handed me $180 for our trouble. It wasn't expected but was nice of them to do that.

Being someone luckily enough to understand this technology, the last thing I would want is to be able to open a hotel room door via a mobile phone.

Most people dont fully understand security on a mobile phone and realise that unless fully setup, a mobile is so easy to hack.

Most people connect their mobile to the 'public' unsecure wifi in the hotels and parks, and openly transmit across it. You might as well just leave your room door ajar when you leave for the day. Its just as safe as allowing the right person to sniff your wifi traffic which will also have your room number and access code available.

Its relatively simple to clone the door access cards that most hotels use, but you need the equipement. Now all you will need is an app from the app store and to follow the simple instructions from Google.

If anyone really insists on using this, then please download some type of VPN software. At least then your wifi traffic will be encrypted.

Hopefully it will never become an opt-out thing rather than opt-in.

My phone battery doesn’t last the whole day in WDW due to the MDE app and taking photos.

I also find it far easier to swipe my wrist than searching about for my phone then having to try to connect to the internet.

It uses Bluetooth (or the one I used did) or maybe NFC and the app has security. It needs no WiFi to function.
Someone would need to hack the app I imagine which I also imagine is encrypted. Or they'd have to get your username and password.
At the moment just as much of a risk is hacking the app, or logging in and assigning a magic band to it and going on a spending spree.
Marriott group have been using it since 2014, and Hilton have had over 12 million uses without a single security breach.
There's no need to use a VPN.
The hackers would also then need someone physically on site to break in. It's an awful lot of hassle when a wonder around, looking for open doors would probably yield much better results.

Will be interesting to see how much further they want to push this. Park tickets on your mobile for example to reduce the no of free magic hands per year!

Like a previous poster, I suspect this is the start of phasing out free bands for onsite guests. They're only issued as they're currently required to access your room. Take that away, no need to hand out bands for free.

I don't think they'll phase out bands completely since the designed and limited edition ones sell well, it'll just be the plain resort bands that go IMO.
