On a slightly separate angle. I live near Cardiff and have booked National Express for October to Gatwick for 4 adults. It is £24 each way which works out at £6 per adult each way. Bargain!

How much of a saving did you make to jump through this many hoops then?

The flights cost 2k and are direct on the way home (since we'll have a car at Gatwick I can't see us hopping on a bus to Cardiff). Leaving MCO at around 7pm. The outbound will be simple too. DW, DD & DS will hop on a train to Cardiff at lunchtime. I will deliver the car to Heathrow (45 min drive) and hop on a bus to Cardiff (cost me £3 for the bus). We all meet in Cardiff have a meal and go to the hotel. Get up super early (3am) and get on the coach to Heathrow... Pick up car... drive to Valet Parking at Gatwick and then walk across the road to departures. The extra hotel night, travel and parking costs are less than £160 so still very happy with the price. We shall report how it all goes in our trippie. It'll be intersting to see how things go for those who are trying alterative ways of getting to Gatwick. Good Luck everyone! |

Is it just me or is everyone totally confused to why you are going anywhere near Cardiff?
You don't live there, you're not flying from there... but you're crossing the width of the UK to meet up and then set of back across the width of the UK at silly O'clock to make it back to your start point to get on the plane? !? Have I missed something. I'm genuinely curious why you're doing this. I hope this doesn't come across negative. just confused yet curious ;-) Nick |

There was a thread about this last year. Basically really cheap flights but as people have said they are from Cardiff (to Heathrow either by train or coach) then to Gatwick. I can't remember the price per person but I'm sure it was around the £500pp Mark.
We have done something similar going Manchester to Heathrow night before then Gatwick to Orlando. That is £525pp this August with BA. We'll be dropping the Heathrow to Manchester return flight and go home from Gatwick. We're Essex based so it is a bit of a hassle getting to Manchester but I managed to get train travel to Manchester, overnight hotel in Manchester and at Gatwick and transfer between Heathrow and Gatwick for only £91 for 2 adults. The same direct flights Gatwick to Orlando were £1000pp at that time so even with this money we've saved around £900 for us both. |

I have just looked at the time table for the train and there are no trains leaving at 5.15am. Which is the one I have been booked on the early train is 5.55am to Heathrow. Is anyone going by train from Cardiff or are you all going by bus?

I assumed this route would be £2-300pp given the legs and changing in London. Seems a lot of time / effort for £500pp but good luck to those traveling - hope it goes without a hitch 👍🏻
We've paid £600pp direct from LGW and I personally wouldn't want to try this route for £100pp saving (plus additional time etc to achieve). |

Wow! I take my hat off to you for doing it. Couldn't think of anything worse personally, I value my time to much. Too many elements involved, so more potentially to go wrong ( in my view). But then, I do worry about just getting around the M25 to get to Gatwick. That can be a challenge in itself
I really hope it all goes smoothly for you.

If you booked these flights direct from gatwick to Mco you would have been looking at about £1000 each, so the faff of getting the train to Heathrow, then bus to gatwick has saved us about £500 per person and there are 7 of us going so it's an absolute no brainer.
In response to the op, when you catch the Heathrow express from Paddington to gatwick they scan the barcode on the ticket before you board the train. Could this be how British Airways know if you have caught the train or not? |
