According to their rules, no. However I believe Tom Morrow has had success in doing it.

When you ring up to book and then apply your Econ to PE 'Reward' upgrade they are very clear. The ability to upgrade to UC with Miles is not possible.

But, it depends who you speak to and how many seats in UC are available. We got an upgrade to UC for my Wife, me and our Grandchild last Summer for £43 each plus Miles.

So the answer is officially no. But it can be done sometimes but don't bank on it.

Yes they were, I found the tips on here invaluable when approaching Virgin and what to expect!
We've got plenty left over and so will use them again in 2020.

You can upgrade Reward seats with miles. I've done this many times. You can't do it with just cash.

The only time you can't upgrade is if you've used the credit card Economy-PE upgrade voucher, you're not supposed to then be able to upgrade to Upper. Tom has had success with this and so did i a couple of months ago. I think mine was more down to the agent not applying the voucher correctly on the original booking. Think she just did it as if i was using the miles.

Another option, which VA agents don't always consider, is to simply cancel the inbound PE reward leg, and rebook as UC reward. The disadvantage is that you have to use full UC miles, rather than economy miles, plus the balance between PE and UC, but at least you can secure the UC reward.

I did this last year, I booked Premium using the economy to PE upgrade voucher & then when upper appeared I rang them. They just refunded the miles & then took the miles for upper class flights + extra tax.

Just out of curiosity I’ve had a look at Belfast to Mco reward flights for end of April next year, PE is available same miles as from Man, but the taxes are virtually half the cost, £487 for 2 instead of £866 I’m really shocked, not sure why but I assumed they’d be almost the same cost!

I think that the bulk of the difference is the APD.

Thanks for that information, I didn’t know that, I’ve just read up on it and the reasons why it’s so, interesting x
