Thats why we take the TRV off and crank down the pin that sticks up under the TRV down tight. Then it will never open up.
Stupid question incoming. Again. How does the TRV screw off?

The top unscrews anti clockwise and you will see a chrome fitting with a pin sticking up. That's the pin that determines what temp the rad is at. It goes from * to 7 normally.

Edit If you give me 45 mins I will post a picture from mine. Cooking at the moment.

This is a Drayton TRV

Crank it down to *

Then just unscrew it by hand or a pair of grips.

This is the underside of the TRV

Where the pin is sticking up is where you crank on a plastic or metal top that pushes the pin right down beyond the * setting so it's totally shut.

Tom has pretty much nailed it but it sounds to me like the thermostatic valve top has failed and it's permanently open - that's why the room is so hot because the valve is never closing.

You can replace just the top part of the thermostatic valve but in the meantime just close the valve at the other end of the radiator. It'll probably be covered by a decorative plastic cap and you'll need a pair of pliers to turn the tab under the cap.

Hi Mr TM,

We are sorting TRVs at the minute and quite like those you have - Drayton market these for towel rails and bathrooms. Do you have them elsewhere in the house? I assume there are no issues - though I cant think why bathrooms would be any different from other places. We like the full chrome ones.

Thx.

We have them on every rad. Full chrome on the chrome kitchen rad (plus chrome pipework there)

The rest are as per the picture. Most are from 1986 when the system was fitted. Some have the British Gas logo on which I don't like so may get new heads to replace them when I have 5 mins.
BG dont like fitting them due to cost but I make them!

Loads of online suppliers do them.
