paypal is good as no fees but the exchange rate is usually lower than average.
if you get their iban details and they have a bank account that accepts it you can do a bank transfer which will charge you but will have a better exchange rate you can also use like western union or another money wiring service - again they will charge you and the exchange rate wont be as good but will normally be higher than paypal I think you cn use wii transfer too but ive never tried that

Transferwise is the best rates and I have used several times with no issues. If you use Paypal and its linked to your bank account the exchange rate will probably be dire. Plus my bank charge fees on top, I found out about transferwise and it was a game changer.

We used Transferwise sending money the other way. It was very easy to set up and it's always there for future use.

I’ve had a look at transferwise and done a dummy run putting in the amount I want to send them it asks for me to put their email address in so that transferwise can request their bank details once I’ve paid the transfer
Is this the norm ? I’m just a bit jittery about it as it’s all new to me! Basically I just want reassurance that I’m not going to get ripped off!

Transferwise is good and exchanges at interbank rate, I use them to send a few thousand over each year but I have the recipients bank details beforehand. Unless it's a gift get your friends bank account and routing (sort code to us), it's straightforward thereafter. Check THIS link for your first fee free/reduced transfer.
