In that case you really should think about staying in 2 locations. They are about a 90 min drive from each other ( on a v. Good day). LA is like a slow moving car park at times ( most times).

We stayed at the Hilton North Glendale which was great for Universal, Hollywood and the LA sights, and then transferred over to the Disneyland Hotel for our Disney time.
It's a fair old trek, even somewhere halfway between the two would have you doing a lot of driving. |

We've had a couple of trips, all slightly different. If you're starting in SF then I would drive up to Monterey then either a night in Santa Barbara or continue on to LA. We've stayed in Glendale a few times as a base for Universal and Hollywood etc, Burbank is also a good base. If you're planning on visiting Disneyland then you would be better to stay in Anaheim itself.

It's just different I suppose, a quirky little Danish settlement, complete with a windmill and delicious bakery and brewery. A nice place for a stopover and a few hours walk, close to some vineyards if that interests you. It has a nice Spanish Mission Church.
Check out piccies in our San F to LA trip report Santa Cruz to Solvang |

We booked Solvang as a stopover and, being a "Little Denmark" of sorts, it looked intriguing.
It was a lovely little town, very pretty with lots of Scandinavian touches. We had a nice dinner al fresco and a little wander around, and then had more of an explore the following morning picking up some lovely fresh pastries for breakfast. There are a lot of wineries in the area, if that's your thing, with many offering tours and tastings. It's not too far to Santa Barbara from there, and exploring both is a great use of a day. |

The PCH is a well trodden tourist route, but it never seems overly busy. Most of us will have several breaks on the way down, as there are many attractions to fit in. 4 days is a max for San F I would think, 6/7 days in LA would best be split 2/3 in LA, 3/4 in Anaheim, more days would easily be filled up with things to do! Universal usually done in a day, Warner Bros studio tour 3-4 hours so can be done in the same day as sightseeing tours of Hollywood etc. Griffith Park for views of 'the sign' and Walts inspiration for the carousel, Santa Monica for Venice Beach/muscle beach/pier/malibu.
Plenty of trip reports available to give you an idea of the choice and complexity of what to miss out/include! |
