Disney's Spaceship Earth at Epcot Closing for Refurbishment

Beginning 26 May 2020 Spaceship Earth at Disney's Epcot theme park will close for a major refurbishment.

There aren't many details at this point but the refurbishment is thought to be a large revamp of the story told on the ride with many of the current scenes receiving a big make-over using new technologies and special effects.

Rumours at present are that the refurbishment could take 2+ years to complete!

Absolutely gutted that I'll not get to ride the original one last time before it closes

I got to ride it when we were there in 2018 and much I like it it could (in my opinion) do with a major over haul. Technology has moved on so much - I imagine the imagineers could have a field day (although I suspect the design for the revamp is already in place)

I do look forward to seeing any construction updates for the attraction even though we may not be able to see much!

You'd have thought they would have wanted it ready for the 50th Anniversary celebrations October 2021, hopefully it won't be closed for too long.
I just watched the second episode of "the Imagineering story" on Disney+ which is focused on Magic Kingdom/Epcot conception, fascinating watching!

Long over due. Love the ride, but looking very dated.
Major brand new rides like Tron take around 3 years to build from ground up. This has the infrastructure already in place and much of the fittings would have been fabricated off site ready to bring in. I would expect they will want a major icon of Epcot to be finished for the 50th.

We took advantage & rode it twice on our trip last November, it's one of our favourite rides, however it's been crying out for some love for a while.
As sad as we are to see it go, we are excited to see what the new ride will be like.
