Candor's Leaf Peeping Tour 2008 - Day 7
Day 7 - A mountain and the tale of two village stores
The scenery of this whole place is unbelievable... it's on a completely different scale to anything in the UK. We got up early as usual, shared the breakfast room with a soccer team, checked out and got on the road again. This time we headed south for Mount Equinox. This Mountain is about 800 feet bigger than Snowdon, but you can drive to the top! Now that is my kind of mountain! It was very cold (it was still before 10am) but nothing compared to the temperature on Mount Washington. The views from the top were magical. The views from the journey back down weren't bad either as the Green Mountains were anything but green: You hear about the colour, you even see pictures of it on the TV or in books but nothing compares to the reality of it. It is amazing. Edited at 10:31 PM. |

From Mt Equinox we took a leisurely drive towards the village of Weston. This was another stereotypical NE village with beautiful scenery. The village itself is famous for the two village country stores that are across the road from each other and are always trying to out do each other.
One country store THe other country store After lunch in the first one we had a look in teh Christmas shop that was next door before heading onto Grafton - another village. This one was almost too perfect but was still amazing. It was hard to imagine people lived there. From there we went onto Historic Deerfield. This was once a frontier outpost that was destroyed by Indian raids in the 1600s. The actual village survived and the old homes are still there along the mile long centre street. 60 of them are carefully preserved. It really is very pretty. From Deerfield we had the simple task of driving down the interstate to Hartford. It took us ages to find somewhere to eat as the police had blocked off loads of the roads in the city centre - who knows what was going on. We went back to the interstate and found an all you can eat buffet just off it for $11 including drinks. Really was good... not quite up there with the Golden Corral but we left full and ready for bed before our drive east to Plymouth in the morning. |

Thata amazing! I have spoken to the Vermont Country Store and they sent me what I needed as their on line web site doesn't let you use it if you're outside the UK! I'm very pleased to see it does look like a real country store! Thanks for sharing!
