Mobile Shy child

I’m looking for tips on taking a shy 4 1/2 year old to Disney. I always hated the characters when I went as a child but she loves the princesses and I’d love her to love meeting them!

So any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!
We took my niece last year, and she was very shy.
She didn't like masked characters except the Disney Jr ones.
But she loved the princesses. They interact with the child so well, Took their time with her and she loved the experience.
I'd say give it a go, and just do it slowly

Maybe book Akershus for a character breakfast, the princesses come to the table while you are eating. They aren’t pushy if the child doesn’t want to participate, saying that we haven’t been for a long time but I don’t suppose it’s changed x

They are trained on how to deal with various child/situations but I do agree with Sandra & Co and your daughter will see other children interacting with the Princesses & that alone will put her more at ease.

My dd was better with an autograph book. She could get near but not too close and hand over the autograph book. This helped break the ice. She also preferred princesses as they can talk back.

My children don’t interact with any of them- my son barely looked at them, scowled in every photo but came out of every meet and greet desperate for the next one and grinning- our holiday photos make are awful but he loved it.
I gave characters the autograph books. Characters just chatted at him!

Thank you all for your advice. We’ll give Akershus a go and take an autograph book!

I was like you as a kid too! A lot of the characters freaked me out, but the princesses were easier because they were SO lovely, and they didn't have creepy masks on 😂the only exception was Winnie The Pooh, cos what stuffed-animal-obsessed 5 year old doesn't love a giant teddy bear?
I think a character meal is a great idea, because the pressure is off her - she can see what's going on at other tables before they get to you, and if she's not into it then the princess can have a chat to you instead!

We went with friends and their children (4, 2 and 2) this year and the toddlers were shy for the first few days but they started with giving a high five to characters and we’re happy to give hugs and get close for pictures by the end. I would say model the interactions and they build confidence. Loved seeing them get more confident over the trip 😊

It definitely helps if you guys all join in too...
I know my younger sister was really shy as a kid, but the more my parents got over-excited/joined in with the characters the more comfortable she felt.
