Candor's Leaf Peeping Tour 2008 - Day 6
Day 6 - American History & Beautiful Vermont
We checked out of our hotel after another “free” continental breakfast. It was hard to believe that it was Saturday already. The sun was out on an extremely fresh morning. Our first port of call was the Shelburne Musuem. For those of you that live in South Wales it was very much along the same lines as St Fagans in Cardiff except everything was nowhere near as old. For those of you who aren’t basically they’ve got loads of buildings that were going to be demolished or destroyed and they’ve taken them apart brick by brick transported them to the museum and then rebuilt there. Others had been built on site to respresent what things were like. It was very interesting as we went from building to building. It was like a museum of American life for the past 150 years. It became apparent that 150 years is very old in American history. Some of the exhibits are below. it was actually a very interesting morning. 1901 Vermont Red Barn Genuine 1920s carousel 1890s railroad train and station Ticonderoga - 1900s steam boat View from the top of the Ticonderoga Edited at 09:45 PM. |

From there we drove on the 7 down towards Rutland where we were staying the night. We checked into the Ramada hotel and as it was still light we decided to travel 30 miles east to visit the Quechee (Pronounced Kwee chee) Gorge.
This truly was amazing. The Gorge is 162ft deep and is called Vermont's Little Grand Canyon. You can park right next to it and walk across the old rail road bridge that the road now goes across. There is also a hike down at the bottom but we decided to stay on the bridge. From there we drove 5 miles back towards Rutland and stopped in Woodstock. This little town was New England as most imagine it: a covered bridge, bandstand on teh green and shuttered colonial houses. From there we travelled back to Rutland, had tea in Dennys before going to bed. Another tiring day in beautiful, beautiful scenery. |

The museum looks fun. Those forests seem to go on forever- wouldn't want to get lost in there !
