Sell flying in to Miami for me...
Hi dibbers
Looking at flights next year it may save us a few hundred quid flying in to Miami and then driving to Orlando. Is this really worth doing to save money? Is the drive easy? If you've done it, would you do it again? Not looking forward to having to do the drive back to Miami at the end of hols. Any advice would be appreciated

I've done it a handful of times. Can't say the airport is the nicest, very busy and the staff are rude. Can take a while to get out as well. It's about a 3 and a half hour drive up to Orlando from the airport so you have to ask yourself if you think you can handle the drive after a long flight. If the answer is no then I would probably suggest just spending a night in Miami and travelling up to Orlando the following day! 😊

We've done it twice, in 2004 and again last year. The drive never bothers us as were used to driving 3+ hours just to visit family in Uk! And it's pretty much the same road so quite an easy (albeit boring) drive.
However in future we would only do this again if we got into Florida in the afternoon. Last year we were due in Miami about 6:30pm which was fine for us. However we ended up delayed for 5 hours at Heathrow so by the time we'd gone through security and getting bags and then car, it was 1am before we left Miami, having then to drive to Orlando where we arrived at 5am. To say we were tired was an understatement! Had the flight been due at 3pm say, even with a delay it would have been better drive for us then what we had. So unless you are ok with the drive, or have a late flight, I'd suggest stopping overnight and driving up next morning. However if you don't mind the drive and your flight in lands early enough then it should be fine to go straight after. We found the journey back down to Miami easier than the way up. |

We've done it twice so far and are doing it again this year. The first time we were delayed by 3 hrs and drove straight to Orlando but were extremely tired for the first few days of the holiday. Last year we were delayed again but we had a night booked at the Embassy Suites so it didn't matter too much, we got the car the following morning and drove up leaving Miami about 9.30. We decided that we would only ever fly into Miami if we overnight as a 3-4 hour drive is tough after a long flight especially if delayed.

Wouldn't fancy the drive after a long travel day tbh
Depends on how much is 'a few hundred' £300 - probably no as you'll effectively lose a day in Orlando, albeit half of that will be on your first night. £900 - probably yes If you're planning on spending some time in Miami anyway then yes, otherwise no. |

We did it in May this year, we booked a night at the Mariott Fairfield Suites in Jupiter about 1.5 hours from Miami airport. We set off earlyish the next morning, checked into our hotel and then spent the afternoon at Universal Studios.
We spent three nights in Miami before our flight home so don't know what the drive back would be like before a flight home I would do it again as the difference between the flight prices when we booked was about £1000 |

At Christmas we flew into Miami for the first time and thought it was fine if a little scruffy. We drove straight from Miami over to Naples which is about a 1-1.5 hour drive. On our way back to Miami we stopped at Disney Vero beach hotel to break the journey up.
Naples is so beautiful we are doing the same this August before driving up to Orlando. I think Miami was about £1000 cheaper than Orlando this time. Richard Edited at 04:22 PM. Reason: Wrong saving posted |

It would have to be a good saving for us to do it again - it's a long drive after a long flight. We hit Miami at rush hour in the rain, not advisable when tired and it felt like a stressful journey. We had a lovely couple of night stay in Fort Lauderdale but we did lose a day of the holiday to travelling.
The drive back felt easier as it was daytime and we took it at our own pace. It is just a boring drive - one straight road with no particular view to look at. Having said all of that, if the price was right we would do it again. This year we flew in and out of Tampa and made a good saving - it's worth checking out other airports as well as MCO & Miami

We're doing it on august for the first time, it was worth it alone for the money we saved, which was over £1500 for our dates. We're staying the night at the Hilton by the airport and driving up to the next day with a stop at Vero beach for some lunch by the sea. We wouldn't have done it if we had to drive up straight after flying, but we're actually flying out a day earlier so it doesnt impact our holiday. Yes, we're not looking forward to the drive back to Miami for the flight home but, it's a small price to pay for such a big saving.
