Drives me mad enough on things I intend to keep for myself, let alone presents. What are these labels made out of that makes them so sticky?

Depending what the packaging or product is I have used nail varnish remover on a cotton wool pad to remove the sticky residue. Have to be careful though as it can remove colour from whatever is underneath! Brilliant for glassware and some plastic.
