It really is up to the individual I think but from listening to Dr Louise Newson her opinion seems to be yes. I had no idea just how important oestrogen is for our long term health and it's appalling that we're not made aware of this. Just think how much information when get given during pregnancy and how little during the menopause.

Ultimately the best thing we can all do is do our research and be well informed of the pro and cons. As well as the website I linked about Dr Newson also puts out regular podcasts which contain loads of useful information. She has also done a few online chats with Davina which you can find on Davina's you tube channel.

My hair is so thin, my hot flushes are so bad, I wake soaked through every night, and cannot go back to sleep, I ache, its unbearable. I have aksed my doctor about Utrogestan, and oestrogen gel. The Utrogestan is natural (made from yams) body identical product and I believe much safer than the HRT that used to be prescribed. I am now waiting for them to decide if I can have it or not.
If they say you can't have it I would expect them to be very clear why not considering the amount of evidence backing the use of it (and NICE guidelines too I believe).

I must admit Davina’s documentary was eye opening for me, as I am 47 and literally about to have blood tests as I finally contacted the doctor as I was becoming increasingly concerned about all of these ‘little symptoms and niggles’ that are adding up and making me feel ike something serious was going on underneath. I could of cried when I heard Davina list all of my symptoms for the menopause.

I’ve never really been someone effected hormonally - periods were regular, (I don’t have them at all now as I’m on the mirena coil) and never ever noticed pre-menstrual mood swings/bloating etc, so I naively thought I’d breeze through the menopause when it happened.

Seeing this about HRT (all I knew was I didn’t want it as it caused breast cancer!), but hearing all of the things it helps like osteoporosis and dementia - my bones are constantly sore, my memory is atrocious these days, it certainly feels that for me and my current ailments that HRT could literally be a lifesaver. I’m just so shocked if others like me, had totally ruled it out when it obviously could have so many benefits for people - I was particularly struck by dementia being the no 1 killer in women - I do wonder if lack of oestrogen now because of missing out on HRT might eventually be proven to be a big factor?

I think not having the periods because of contraception can really throw us when the menopause strikes. I’m on the mini-pill since January and haven’t had a period since. Everything I read about menopause says it’s when your periods stop, but we don’t have that measure. I would imagine that before that they become irregular - again not something we’d see. Good luck talking to your doctor - let us know how you get on

Like all med's as I've said above, some it suits, some it doesn't some it can make worse than the menopause symptoms but if you don't try then you will never know. I have a friend who tried 3 different types of HRT before she found one that suited her. No different to other meds one is given. I can only have 1 type of antibiotic as others don't suit me.
As previously said I had to have a hysterectomy quite young. I had taken he Birth pill for a lot of years & never ever had a problem on it so I had no hesitation at all going on HRT 2 days after having the op. Those two days showed me what it must be like for a lot of women & I was not going there thank you. I had a test for osteoporosis, just because our surgery offered it, some years back & the consultant reviewing my tests told me I had extremely good bone structure & no signs of any disintegration. I asked about whether that was anything to do with being on HRT to which she said 'undoutably & as long as you stay on it you will continue to benefit as far as osteoporosis is concerned'

I watched too and thought it was a very candid open and honest programme about a subject that is never discussed enough. Peri menopause is thought to last on average 10 years. Average menopause age 51. Treatments and types of hormones have come a long way over the years. Having watched my Mum & older sister suffer because they felt it is just part of getting older & that one family member had breast cancer. I've finally got HRT patches to collect next week. I cant continue to survive on 2/3 hours sleep aching joints headaches palpitations and hideous night sweats any longer. Ive been following Dr Newson on Instagram for a while. She talks a lot of sense. X
