We’ve used every company there is. There is no appreciable difference imho. Alamo do offer the choose your car option, but it’s not something I would pay a lot more for.

As Gryff says, its mainly just being aware of the sales staff trying to flog you extras.. Just make sure to read the screen before you sign.

And check the rental agreement shows $0 next to the estimated charges, unlike:

My tips
Investigate their new online check in it can be done up to 2(two ) hours before pick up
I intend to do it on my long connection wait at Heathrow
Read read and if possible get someone else to read the paper work before you sign
Do not take the marvellous up grade price today it’s often because they only have that class of car left anyway
Don’t accept well it will need to be a smaller car then nope it won’t I’ve had a mustang
Convertible they had to bring round from Avis because they didn’t have my group of car available so know your group
They allocate you a car if it’s a clunker go back to the in garage desk and demand something else
Toll pass make sure you have said no and ticked the box as no if you want to refuse it
Likewise check no responder on the windscreen and switch it off
Make sure if you have two drivers as BA budget car hire does not include a second driver sometimes a spouse is free you only pay the current upgrade price which is $65
For the length of hire at the desk
And before exiting the car park at the barrier check the paperwork is correct
On return do not accept we will email your receipt nope you won’t a print out please
We have our own sun pass so I use it but if you are using it keep a note of the tolls you used daily
If the free visitor toll pass scheme is reintroduced I use that or pay as you use the tolls
If not doing lots of driving about
Thank you

Car hire is so expensive for this year and for the price we have paid for flights and car hire, I think we are just going to have to grin and bear it.

I have seen differences between budget and Avis about Ł5 different at times?

BA are very good and would swap the provider for you.

They were quite a lot more. For group W (Nissan Pathfinder or similar), Avis are coming in at an extra Ł600!

That's good to know, how long would you say is the longest you have had to wait to be seen at the desks?

It was literally a couple of pounds in it and it also meant I could put down a deposit

Thanks for your replies everyone. I think because we have only ever used Alamo in the past and have been able to choose our own car, we have been lucky.

I think for us the thought of having to queue hours for car hire is a nightmare!

Avis Budget Group, Inc. is the American parent company of Avis Car Rental, Budget Car Rental, Budget Truck Rental, and Zipcar, consisting of its global brands. Its local brands include: Payless Car Rental, Apex Car Rentals, Maggiore Group and France Cars. Its network brands include: AmicoBlue, MoriniRent, TurisCar, TurisPrime, and ACL Hire. The company is a Delaware Corporation headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey, United States. It serves 180 Countries.

This is why you generally find the Avis and Budget desks right next to each other. It is rather strange that whilst many laud Avis, Budget are regarded less highly.

Budget (or Avis) are very much my preferred car hire company and I have never had an issue with them. I always right ‘everything declined at desk’ next to my signature on every hire company form at time of pickup as a precaution.

Having said that, the issues seem to lie with the desk at MCO. When in Orlando, I always pick up from the desk at the Holiday Inn near Universal after a night on IDrive and a night in RPR or Hardrock. Great guys at that desk who also provide Avis (they are the same company).
When elsewhere, Dayton OH, San Francisco, Pensacola, Miami etc there have never been snags either.

I have not often had a choice of car with Budget and that may be due to where I have picked them up. Not being a car person, this does not bother me in the slightest, provided it is clean serviceable and of at least the level that I booked. I want to drive it, not lick, cuddle and kiss it. It’s a car.

Thank you. I am wondering if it might be worth considering getting an Uber to Cabana Bay and then picking up the car from a different location nearer universal. This might be a better option for us.
