30 is going to happen anyway, best do it in Vegas - Day2 - Snow Chance - Nov/Dec 2018

Index here
We were up, packed and checking out at 8:30am, later than planned as we had a few stops to hit, so breakfast was the doubletree cookie and snacks we’d brought with us from home.

Down through the hotel and casino to check out and loaded up the Dodge.
Our first stop was the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge to view the Hoover Dam. We made good time and we arrived with lots of spaces to choose from.
Spot the Orange Dodge

It’s a short zig-zagged walk up to the bridge, which was empty on the way up but I didn't get a pic until the way down.

Seeing the dam was more incredible than I expected. It's an amazing piece of engineering and seeing the lake behind is quite scary, when you start to think about it.

The time of year and the early start meant that there were points where we were the only people on the bridge, so it was great to have some quiet time, take photos and really take it all in.

The state line is about half way across the bridge, however we were on the wrong side of the road to get the Arizona sign.

After a trip to the horrible composting-type toilets, we hit the road again. This stop was the Walmart in Kingman Az.
We stocked up on snacks and drinks for the next 2 nights as we’d heard it would be very expensive within the national park. I’m always horrified at the cost of beer and crisps in the US, not that it stops us, but $3.60 for a bag of Doritos is crazy. I also managed to finally buy hair dye at a less obscene cost.

I had planned to try in and out burger but as time was ticking away we grabbed a McDonalds while in Walmart and ate it in the car, it was really good. Nice burger with bacon, cheese and bbq sauce.

Something that totally baffled us was a man with a crate of puppies on the ground in the car park, I assume he was selling them. We weren’t sure what to make of it, considering it would shock us if we saw someone doing that at home, but at home the dodgy breeders or puppy farmers sell from normal looking homes to trick people, so I don’t know if it’s really worse.

Topped up the fuel and we were off again, this time to hit route 66 and Seligman to see Delgadillo's snow cap drive-in and have a milkshake.
66 was great to drive on, slower speed limit, but no other cars, which was a little unnerving at times.

Looking at Seligman was incredible, amazing little town, so many classic cars, murals on walls etc. Very interesting place.
Pulling up to snow cap, we noticed it was very quiet, another couple were standing outside their car, they told us it was closed for the season. Gutted! We got out to have a look around anyway and loved all the little trinkets, signs, car parts etc. We’ll have to return in the future to visit.

The last part of the journey was long and uneventful, through to the Grand Canyon National Park via a gas station just off the motorway around the Williams area. We did really enjoy the scenery on the drive, there is nothing to see but that's mind blowing compared to driving at home.

Sadly, we hadn’t realised the time difference to MST when working out sunset times, so we wouldn’t see the canyon today. We arrived at Maswick Lodge and parked up near the reception building, check in told us we had a ground floor room so could park right outside, perfect.
As we got back to the car, it was starting to snow! Got everything into the room and the heating was blasting, so nice and warm. The room was tired and basic, which we expected as they were closing the South rooms for refurbishment shortly after our stay. Despite this it was cosy and practical with a bathroom, sink, coffee machine, TV, table and chairs, small fridge and most importantly good heaters.

That evening we ate at the Maswick food court, as the pizza pub appeared closed off, although I wasn’t quite sure. It was a basic canteen, with different food stations, we both had a hotdog, it wasn’t good.
Back to the room for snacks and a beer, where we discovered Mean Girls was on, I had to twist the cable a bit to get a vaguely clear image, luckily I'm one of the last generation of people to know how to deal with old TVs.

Early night with early alarms set for sunrise.
