New puppy won’t walk!

Hi everyone!

We’ve recently welcomed a gorgeous new puppy into our house who is settling in so so well. He’s an absolute delight and we cannot believe we waited so long to get him! He’s our best bud and comes everywhere with us. At the breeders he used to like walking and she’d take him on little walks but we’ve tried numerous times and he just will not walk. He just sits there and refuses to move! He tears round at home and in our garden he loves it but outside he just won’t move he just stands there and flatly refuses. 😂
He’s only 13 weeks old and so only little but the breeder said he liked it but clearly he doesn’t. He’s more than happy to be carried everywhere however!
Any tips to get little legs moving a little?

I know its not the answer you want but I would be quite happy to carry him everywhere, he's too cute!
Is he Maltese?

Haha - my hubby is more than happy to carry him everywhere too but it doesn’t help with social distancing as everyone wants to pet him!
Yes! A Maltese. 😍

Our Golden retriever did the same, he suddenly realised there was a big wide world out there and became scared. Gentle coaxing, lots of “good boy” and a small amount of bribery in the form of peanut butter , thrown about 4 food in front of him, so he stepped forward... took about a week...never looked back since , he’s nearly 10 now

Firstly he is adorable is he food motivated? My puppy will do literally anything for a puppy treat. If not, have you tried taking him to the park and then just letting him walk there? He is so teeny he just might find the cars and the noises a bit intimidating walking directly from the house. We drive to a park about 10 minutes up the road from us that is dog friendly and we found it great for getting him confident on the lead. Xx

Aww he is just adorable 😍 we have a Maltese as well and they are just the best.

Ours is 4 years old and he was just like that as a puppy, and even now if he doesn’t want to walk nothing can make him go!

We have found he prefers to be off the lead so we take him on lots of walks to the beach or park where he can run around off the lead safely. He’s very good and doesn’t stray too far away from us.

I think just like another poster he could be a bit scared as everything is so much bigger and louder than him

They should only be doing 15 mins at that age anyway so I wouldn’t worry too much. They do suggest carrying them about to get acclimatised...

We have a 3 year old Shih Tzu and he wouldn’t walk when we first started taking him out.
We always had treats with us which did encourage him and once he got going there was no stopping him.
Occasionally he will decide when out on a walk he’s not going any further or he wants to go a different way.
He does it with DH more than me because he knows DH is a soft touch 🤣
He is absolutely gorgeous and I can see why your DH would carry him all the time

Thank you everyone! I shall go armed with treats next time! We are lucky to live in the country on near open fields so it’s not busy where we take him so hopefully we can get him moving. In the meantime he’s happy to be carried and we are happy to oblige.
He’s an absolute doll - we love him so much and can’t imagine life without him. He steals all our socks though! 🤣

I agree that carrying him round is good as he can experience the world from a safe distance. Also on days its not to cold, try sitting on a park bench for a short time with him on the floor, so he can watch people go past.
I understand what you say about social distancing, someone in our village has a gorgeous little spaniel, and I so want to go and cuddle it
