DS (11) has come home from playing rounders after school with a massive graze on his knee. So no beach for him in the 1st week, we go next Tues ...

My DH was on a training course in Stevenage in 2016 & somehow managed to develop Necrotising fasciitis in his leg, he then developed Sepsis & sadly died of Septic shock 3 days later so it can happen anywhere

Really sorry to hear that. My friend considers himself incredibly lucky. It is a truly dreadful disease.

Frightening how it happens. sorry to hear about your DH, sepsis can be rapid and difficult to treat, this worried me on chemo 2 years ago.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Think we will review beach visits once we are there. Boys would be tempted to go in and it will be difficult for them to just walk on the beach. Have been watching for Red Tide reports but never expected this. I used to love swimming in the sea at Long Boat Key.

Agree, as someone who works in the NHS I have seen several cases of necrotising fasciitis, and none of them had been to Florida or swimming - it can develop even in people with a healthy immune system, even after a small scratch (most people with it cannot recall any skin damage)
