My mum's boyfriend forgot his about 3 years ago. Remembered when we got to the 7 bridge which is only an hour from our house but didn't say anything as didn't want to make a fuss and thought he would be fine without the insulin for a 3 week holiday My father passed away after years with Type 1 which caused complications and my eldest daughter is also Type 1 so we knew we couldn't mess about even though he insisted he'd be fine as he was Type 2
So when we got to Florida, much to his protests, we had to go to Walmart, who then sent him to a doctors (which we had to pay for) across the road who then had to ring UK to speak to someone to get all his details. They then did a prescription which we used in the Walmart. BUT they would only do the insulin he needed in batches of 5 i believe which were roughly $200 each from memory. He only needed 1 but they wouldn't budge. He needed a night insulin too which again came in batches of 5. Took hours and hours and hours to sort with lots of back and for (they had to get the insulin in especially for him which was a few hours). So all in all his little not making a fuss to turn around at the 7 bridge for the sake of an hour or 2 (we were staying the night in a hotel before the flight for this very reason if something is forgotten that is big/essential) cost us practically 2 days off our holidays His health was our concern before anyone shoots us down because if it was left to him he would have gone all holiday with out insulin. He had to make numerous calls back and for to Insurance too. But in a nutshell my mum had to pay for it all (he had no card or anything ) and then claim back off the insurance when home. My advice is get on the phone asap to insurance and if you can your doctors. Or someone back home who could e-mail or whatsapp a pic of your prescription. Just read you are on your way so i would ask when you land to speak to someone and explain what happened as it may get things sorted quicker. Keep you fluid intake up to try flush any sugars building up out is about all you can really do as lack of insulin is going to start your bloods increasing. Regular monitor them and if need be a good walk may be needed. Good luck and hope you get it sorted |

Just to add, be very careful about driving etc as if something happens then you may not be insured.
I'm sure they will be a great help at the airport, don't be afraid to ask as we have had a few issues in the past that we needed help with and under their tough questioning exterior they have always been great tbh |

Sorry tapped like by accident... You would need to contact your insurance provider straight away.
There are paramedics at the airport - if you need their support just ask at immigration. I dread to think how much replacement prescription would cost if you had to pay cash so start with your insurers and hopefully you are covered. Hope you get it sorted out easily. Edited at 04:48 PM. |

My friends husband forgot his insulin on a 3 week holiday to Antigua, not as easy to get medication as in the US.
Interestingly he is a diabetic consultant and she is a diabetic specialist nurse! It can happen to anyone. |

Glad you got it sorted, as a fellow type 1 It must have been very concerning even being on the flight without any insulin.
Sorry to say, with T1 friends in the US I'm aware re prices, same price in the UK for an identical insulin around £30. The main thing is your DH is sorted and you can now enjoy your holiday |

Oh my word, that must have been a stressful flight. My daughters bloods go through the roof when she is stressed, or excited for that matter.
Why do you think you may not be covered on your holiday insurance? As a mother of a diabetic this is very worrying. We have insurance via our bank account (nationwide) and pay extra for her diabetes to be added. Scary to think this could not be covered because I am aware that diabetic medication is expensive in the US Does he still have his meter etc for testing his bloods? Just no insulin? (Well, not ‘just’ but you know what I mean) Hope everything goes well and can you please let us know how you get on as it may be useful for others in the future. Thanks |

The price of insulin in the US is horrendous! Read so many stories of people trying to ration it am so glad for the NHS.
