I renewed our passports a couple of months ago, did the application online on a Sunday, sent the old passports on Monday to Durham and Peterborough. Wife's came back within a few days from Peterborough and mine took just over a week.

I always get a new ESTA as soon as I commit money to a US trip if my current one won't cover the trip. If this means renewing early and losing a few months on an ESTA, then so be it.

The $14pp cost is nothing in the grand scale of what you are spending on a US trip - particularly if you are doing all the Orlando parks, where you can easily rack up a £700 park ticket bill per person (Disney 14 day, Universal 14 day, SeaWorld / Aquatica / Busch 14 day + Discovery Cove dolphin swim).

There is always that slight chance that your ESTA may be declined & you have to go down the visa route, which can take months. No travel insurance will cover you for failing to have the correct documentation in place to enter the USA.

I have never had an ESTA declined (they are normally approved within minutes). I now have Global Entry too which may also help, as the USA have already done more than a few background checks on me.

I don't even wait till I've booked a trip to get mine. As soon as one expires I get another one. It's one less thing to think about when I actually book a trip.
