If you want to guarantee sitting together then you will have to pay the price.
The advantage of selecting seats early is that you will get more choice in where you will be seated. Personally, I never bother and see what is available at online checkin. As a group of four we have always been allocated seats together on over a dozen trips in peak summer. Unlike some airlines, BA do try to seat parties together.

Checked in online an hour ago and have been allocated seats together, happy that I didn’t pay to prebook them.

I'm afraid BA have turned seat selection into a real money spinner with prices increasing each year to the point that you wonder if, in a few years, the seats will cost more than the flights! . It's a question of whether you want to cough up for particular seats or to be definitely seated together or alternatively take a chance and save some additional expense.
