A few years ago I was alone in the kitchen at home, clearing dishes after a steak dinner. One of the kids had left some pieces on their plate and I ate one of them. Only I didnt chew properly and it got stuck in my throat.
It was a horrible experience, at first I tried to swallow, then I didnt get air so natural instinct is to try to breathe in. I couldnt call for help and started panicking. Finally began coughing and after 3-4 coughs managed to get the piece out. Was shaking afterwards, absolutely frightening.

You can perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on yourself using the back of a chair for extra force.
Fortunately I've never had to do it on myself or others. DD choked a few times when she was little, not able to get air in or out, luckily holding her downwards across my lap while I gave firm slaps on her back solved the problem. But I can still hear the two ladies on the table next to me at Ikea, "Oh, look, that baby's choking!" They didn't offer to help or check I was OK after the experience. |

This happened to me a couple of years ago with a piece of beef. My airway was completely blocked. Strangely I didn’t panic but went totally calm, time seemed to stop and I remember getting up from the chair and thinking if I don’t get this out I am going to die. I balled up both my fists shoved them under my ribs and bent forwards as far and as fast as I could and out it popped.
