Greece - Overwhelmed!

We're looking to go to Greece next year but are a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities! We're planning on spending a few days in Athens and then heading to an island for a more relaxing component, but we're not too sure where to head to. We'd rather take a ferry out of Athens than fly and I'd also prefer a villa/apartment style break over a hotel, but I'm having some trouble finding what I'm looking for (which may well not exist)!

A sanity check on some good options would be very welcome.

I am not sure how viable any of them are but we have just on a Greek island cruise and loved Santorini with Mykonos and Rhodes being close second. We have also been to Athens x

Santorini is top of my list and is definitely viable, I just want to make sure I'm not missing a trick (as Santorini is also working out quite expensive...!).

Have you read my Greek island hopping trip report? I've been back a couple of weeks. We flew into Athens stayed overnight in Piraeus. Spent time on Mykonos then Naxos and lastly Santorini. My least favourite was Santorini. Loved Naxos. Mykonos was pretty busy and expensive in parts. We are planning another trip next year. Flying into Athens spending 2 nights there then getting a ferry to Spetses then on to Hydra and then a chilled week on Poros. Depends what you like and whose going. Never had a bad holiday in Geeece.
