Universal Studios/IOA end January beginning February

Can anyone tell me how busy these two parks are at that tome of the year ?

Would it be vital to stay at one of the Universal Hotels to get early access ?

I am hoping that as long as we get there early and hit the big rides first the queues won't be too long

I was in them from the 1st-5th this year. We had express passes and waited about 10-15 mins in the main ride qs . Everything else was walk on (I know you said without passes but just letting you know what like with them so you can roughly estimate it)
