best place to stay- LA or Santa Monica

planning on visiting during a road trip we are planning- was thinking of staying in SM for 3 nights and visiting LA sights from there. Will that be doable or should we stay bearer the city?

What are the sights you want to see? If all the sights you want are the usual WB/Universal/Hollywood then SM might not be worth it, it�s a pricy spot. You could also split the difference and stay between Hollywood and SM in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills/Grove area.

For our West LA section, we stayed at Thousand Oaks (Palm Garden Hotel) which worked well for us. Had originally thought of Malibu area, but cost, ratings, weather decided us to move inland a bit.
