Alan Turing is to be the new face of the £50 note.

Seems rather fitting for a great man most of us, myself included, knew very little about until a few years ago.

A Genius who no doubt saved over a Million lives by shortening WW2. His mathematical genius was up there with the likes of Stephen Hawking etc.

And what did we as a Country do to him? Treated him in a similar manner to how Nazi Germany or the Japanese Empire would have some 10 years previously. We should forever hang our head in shame regarding his case.

I was so pleased to see he has been recognised by the Bank of England.

Honouring a Scientist/ mathematician and some one this country did a great injustice to. Glad his work is now being recognised and the country is showing him respect.

100% this. I suspect he is smiling wryly at the irony of being honoured in this way. As Tom says, conviction and chemical castration is the way we treated a national hero - which ultimately led to him taking his own life.

Yep, I remember sitting in a uni lab in Newcastle trying to build something 20 years ago that could pass the Turing test.

We've just about reached the point now that things like Alexa and Siri are "Turing" passes.

One question, will they use Turing's actual photograph or one of Benedict Cumberbatch (he gets everywhere else so why not hear as well - most people will then actually recognise it as Turing if they are lucky enough to get £50 note)

Like when they photoshopped Jane Austen's only know picture before putting it on the £10 note!
It looks like his actual picture so hopefully if it gets people asking who it actually is, more people will learn what an amazing man he was & how awfully he was treated!
