I don't think Universal had the Express Pass system back in 1995. I think Disney's Fastpass system was the first virtual queuing system at a major theme park and that started in 1999.
Anyway, I've been loking through some old park maps and found the following from 2001 (hopefully it's readable): So, back in 2001, Universal allowed those with multi-day tickets to book 3 fastpasses for free. You could only book another once you'd used all three fastpasses. Hmm, that sounds familiar... Of course, Universal being greedy, they then started to charge for this.
