Car hire prices

Can anyone tell me if you wait to reserve and book car hire last minute to travel is it cheaper than booking in advance?
Over £480 just now for an SUV for 2 weeks just wonder if you book last minute you get a better deal?
Thanks

I have never seen cheap deals last minute, but I have seen prices rocket in the last few days before travel.
Why not book now with a company that allows free cancellations.

As Mr T suggests. Book now with a company offering free cancellation.
If the prices start to reduce then cancel and book at the cheaper price.
If however prices increase you will have saved.
Win-win really.

Ive been following car hire prices since around october last year for our trip in middle of May. We have also gone with a mid size suv and go with Alamo Brits. Back in October they were £310 for 14 days which is roughly the price we paid in 2010, 2012 and 2015. I left it as Christmas was coming etc and was going to book in January like we have done every other time at roughly this price. Then for some reason at around November/December they spiked in price upto £1200 for the same 14 days As quick as they went up they then dropped to £408 and now recently £431. Ive bitten the bullet and have booked at that price only because the nearer we get (although a while yet) the more they have me over a barrel having to pay whatever they decide. With Alamo Brits it is free cancellation and you get a 2nd driver free. Will obviously cancel and rebook if they drop.

We booked through Alamo Brits a couple of weeks ago for September. £406 for an intermediate SUV. I have been keeping an eye on prices as we wanted to cancel and rebook a full size car instead. I checked yesterday at work and the SUV was £499, checked again at home last night and it was £418. As others have said, I would book a cancellable one and then if the price comes down you can rebook.

We have used a company called Cars-Scanner who have come up with the most competitive prices for our car hire for Florida in March and Sept 2017. I prefer to use Alamo, and they came up with the best prices. Also no problems with doing Skip the counter either.
