Virgin UK Excess Insurance
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to keep the basic car insurance that is packaged in through Virgin Holidays Package and then just pay the excess insurance in the UK as per the article at moneysavingexpert Rather than paying the several hundred dollars to upgrade it through virgin? Thanks |

Hi. Its not actually the excess Insurance you are buying. If you do go DIY (and I won't) its CDW and SLI you need plus excess. So a lot more than just an excess Policy we buy here for European rentals.
Basically the car with Virgin is uninsured and you need 1 million $ SLI

Virgin use alamo cars. I did not get the upgraded insurance through virgin and got a holiday car excess insurance policu which includes collision damage waiver and supplentry liabililty insurance which is need in the usa as they do not have insurances.
Before I did this I checked with alamo and they are happy to except and liase with this type of policy should a large claim arise. If it is a smaller claim they would take this from your credit card but you would claim this back from your insurer when in the uk. In comparison for a years excess policy this cost me £85 where as if I went with virgins policy it would have cost over £400 for 2 weeks. If you want piece of mind then go with the virgin alamo policy. If your ok with doing some paperwork and having a temp maxed credit card then consider a hire car excess policy with SLI and CDW. There are people who will say if the car is written off they will charge you the full amount for a new car on your credit card. This is a myth and does not happen. |

You do need extra insurance as hire cars only come with a basic policy which would make you liable for any damage to the car and anything over 15k should should you be at fault against the 3rd party driver. Do not go out there with just the basic insurance attached as this could be financial suicide.
Either pay for the inclusive or take out a car hire excess policy which will include SLI and CDW |
