Another vote for champagne and charcuterie as a quasi-starter.

I wrap slices of fresh peach (if i can get them) in basil and parma ham and secure with a cocktail stick. Add in some mixed charcuterie meats, a bit of smoked salmon and a few posh breadsticks and thats enough to soak up the first glass(es) of fizz and stop the chef getting too tipsy to cook.

I tend to serve that on the coffee table and i use my Gran’s best china to make it fancy. That way we can just relax and chill on the sofa. It also keeps the table looking nice for the main event - we tend to have a gap of a few hours between courses

We seem to have evolved to having creamy garlic mushrooms on good sourdough toast purely because it seems quickest and easiest as all other kitchen equipment tends to be in use 😂

There are only 4 of us for Xmas dinner - DD and I usually have something smoked salmon related, and DH and my dad have prawns or pate.
I've tried doing other things but we all enjoy those and they're easy.

My personal favourite - others didn't agree! Is a yorkshire with a small strip of roast beef curled inside it drizzled with thick onion (chutney watered down ish) gravey.

We always get breaded prawns, mozzarella dippers and breaded chicken. My daughter air fries them while I cook the roast. Going out this year but probably have some picky bits x

I wasn’t planning to do a starter this year but now I read this thread and…well, it has to be a classic prawn cocktail with a mini roll on the side!
